Along Europe's Scenic "Yellow Roads"

Speaking of traditions... From castles to concerts to cafés, time-honored traditions from across the centuries are at the heart of cultural life in the historic cities and across the idyllic countryside you'll explore on a two-week trip through the center of "old Europe."

And they're often variations on a theme: Sipping coffee in a café on a sunny square surrounded by medieval buildings in Kraków or Budapest or Vienna or Prague... perhaps enjoying a pastry known to Hungarians as rétes, to Czechs as závin, to Austrians as strüdel... or listening to local musicians play melodies by Chopin in Warsaw, or Mozart in a private palace in Vienna... After-hours Schönbrunn Palace visit

An Imperial Reception & after-hours tour at Schönbrunn

Your special experience at Vienna's Schönbrunn Palace – the opulent, 1,441-room Baroque summer residence of the Habsburg royals – begins with an Imperial Reception at the Gloriette pavilion, perched on a hill overlooking the palace's magnificent gardens. Then enjoy an after-hours tour of the palace's Imperial Apartments, revealing the residential suite of rooms occupied by Emperor Franz Joseph and his wife Elisabeth (popularly known as "Sisi") – including the bedroom furnished in the Blondel style for the imperial couple at the time of their 1854 wedding, but only used during the early years of their marriage, and the Rococo Revival salon where Empress "Sisi" received her visitors – plus other royal apartments.

Tauck Exclusive – Private tour of the Strahov Monastery libraries

Day 12

An exclusive private tour of the Baroque libraries of Strahov Monastery

Established in 1120, the medieval Strahov Monastery in Prague was restored in grand Baroque style in the 18th century – especially its two magnificent libraries which together hold one of the world's greatest collections of theological and philosophical books, illuminated manuscripts and prints. On your Tauck Exclusive, behind-the-scenes private tour of the Strahov Monastery libraries – as other visitors look on – you'll stand mesmerized by the towering gilded bookcases, ornate balconies, wall murals, ceiling frescoes (some fifty feet overhead), altars, printing presses, and the Cabinet of Curiosities... enough to give any visitor to this contemplative place a great deal to contemplate!

Tauck Exclusive – After-hours visit to the Imre Nagy House

Day 7

A private, after-hours visit to the Imre Nagy Memorial House in Budapest

After serving in the Austro-Hungarian army during World War I, Hungarian-born Imre Nagy later joined the Russian Communist Party and the Red Army, and became a Soviet citizen before returning to his native country to take part in the Hungarian Communist government following World War II. Rising to leadership of Hungary's government as Prime Minister during the anti-Soviet Hungarian Revolution of the 1950s, Nagy was arrested by the Soviets for treason, and secretly tried and executed in 1958. Today, Nagy is revered as a martyr and national hero by the people of an independent Hungary, and his former villa in Budapest has been transformed into the Imre Nagy Memorial House and Museum – where you'll enjoy a Tauck Exclusive, private after-hours visit featuring a lecture on the Hungarian Revolution and a reception with special "Molotov Cocktails."
