Two nights in Perugia at a palace hotel feature exploration of Assisi, an exclusive wine experience at a renowned vineyard, a hand-weaving workshop, a basilica visit, and special access to "Gaite" workshops in Bevagna... Truffle hunting in the Umbrian hills

Day 4

Trained dogs and "black diamonds" – truffles – in the hills of Umbria

In Italy, they're called tartufi; much of the world knows them as truffles. But whatever you call it, this rare, pungent (and highly perishable) fungus that grows under the ground in certain parts of Europe is one of the most expensive foods on Earth, highly prized by chefs and gourmets around the globe. Centuries ago, early truffle-hunters used pigs, with their keen sense of smell, to root these treasures out of the ground… but the piggies usually ate the truffles as soon as they found them! So they began training dogs to sniff them out... like the pooches you'll meet and go truffle hunting with after lunch and a tasting at a family-owned farm in Umbria.

The frescoes of Perugia's Collegio del Cambio

Day 6

Check out the remarkable frescoes of the Collegio del Cambio on a walking tour of Perugia

In medieval Italy, much of a community's power was wielded by the guilds – the associations of merchants or artisans who controlled the various trades. In Perugia, the capital of Umbria, one of the symbols of the guilds' power that survives today is the Palazzo dei Priori and its adjacent Collegio del Cambio, built in the 1450s as the headquarters of the powerful money-changers' guild – whose "Sala delle Udienze" (audience hall) is decorated with an exquisite set of frescoes, completed around 1500 under the supervision of the Umbrian painter Pietro Perugino (Pietro Vannucci), which you'll view on your visit. Perugino's most famous pupil was a very young Raphael, who may have worked on the remarkable frescoes you'll see here.

SINA Palace

Nights 5 and 6

A 19th-century hilltop mansion in medieval Perugia

At SINA Palace, perched in the historic center of medieval Perugia, expect touchstones of the past everywhere you look: massive stone fireplaces... grand chandeliers... antique furnishings... ornate frescoes... hanging tapestries... even ancient Etruscan ruins that you can view through the glass-bottomed swimming pool...

This was a new trip for Tauck and it lived up to be as wonderful as their other trips. It was fun to 'explore' these small, mostly unknown villages of Tuscany.
