Phare – The Cambodian Circus

Phare – Transforming the lives of Cambodian youth

While in Siem Reap, you’ll attend a remarkable performance of Phare – The Cambodian Circus. More than just a circus, a Phare performance employs theater, music, dance and modern circus arts to tell uniquely Cambodian stories; historical, folk and modern. The group’s young circus artists will astonish you with their energy, emotion, enthusiasm and talent. Phare artists are students and graduates from Phare Ponleu Selpak’s vocational training center in Battambang, formed in 1994 by nine young men after coming home from a refugee camp following the Khmer Rouge regime. Having been greatly helped during that time by an art teacher who used drawing classes as therapy, they wanted to share their new skills among poor and troubled youngsters. The free public school and alternative art school they founded later expanded to include music, theatre and finally, the circus arts. Today, more than 1,200 pupils attend the public school daily, and some 500 attend the alternative schools… including some of the performers you’ll see today.

Belmond La Résidence d'Angkor

Nights 10-12

Traditional elegance near Cambodia’s magical temple complexes

Modern luxury, contemporary style and ancient Cambodian traditions await you at Belmond La Résidence d’Angkor in Siem Riep… a short distance away from the treasured Khmer temple complexes of Angkor Wat and Angkor Thom, and close to Tonlé Sap Lake. Inspired by ancient Khmer architectural traditions, the hotel features elegant teak and basalt accents that evoke the nearby wonders left behind centuries ago by the Khmer civilization. Itself an oasis in an inviting riverside setting, Belmond La Résidence d'Angkor is also just minutes away from the lively markets, galleries, restaurants and nightlife of Siem Riep.

Overnight Cruise on Ha Long Bay

Days 3 and 4

Life on the "Bay of the Descending Dragons"

Experience life along the historic rivers, bays and deltas of Indochina firsthand on an overnight cruise among the limestone islets of Vietnam’s Ha Long Bay – a UNESCO World Heritage Site, known in local legends as the “Bay of the Descending Dragons.” According to local mythology, when the gods sent dragons to help defend the people of this region against ancient invaders, the dragons spat out jewels and jade; these became the many emerald green islands and islets you’ll encounter as you cruise the bay today. Ancient temples, local farmers, water buffalo and more pass by as you sail into the bay aboard a ship employing Vietnamese design concepts and featuring comfortable, well appointed accommodations.
